The coronavirus has served as a catalyst to re-examine our public spaces. While the virus and its shelter in place orders have brought air pollution relief to many places, it has made clear the inescapability of human interdependence and the communal connectivity and sense of identity which can be lost without these spaces. It is more clear than ever that public art must function as a spur for the imagination as critical social practice and as a means towards greater inclusivity.
Small Town * Big Art hopes to continue to facilitate public art works that foster public engagement, deep listening and collective learning.
ST*BA is an example of combining pre-existing infrastructure and positive relationship growth with local government, building owners and residents who understand the power of art to bring together a community.
