ST*BA was thrilled to welcome Sean to the team this past October, who has covered our project collaborations with Eric Okdeh, Michael Takemoto and Kirk Kurokawa to date - each time with an absolute grace, professionalism and generosity that has shined through in his work.
We recently asked Sean to share his experience documenting Kirk Kurokawa's Hoʻomau piece at the Victim Witness Building/ Maui County Children’s Peace Center located at 2103 Wells Street, Wailuku:
ST*BA: Why do you do what you do?
SMH: I love capturing people, their surrounding environment and doing what they love to do also.
ST*BA: What is the best part about your job?
SMH: It used to be possible to travel on assignment but now the best part of what I do is to document on my home island and its community.
ST*BA: Having spent time with Kirk each day, why do you think he was selected for this particular site (as one of more than 20 artists to date)?
SMH: Its connection to its actual location to help the keiki & ohana here on Maui.
ST*BA: One detail I shared was that you could make your own schedule; to choose the days and amount of time that you needed to be onsite in order to capture the process your own way - yet you were there each of the 10 days! Why was this necessary for you, as an artist? (If it was).
SMH: I felt it was necessary & really important to document the "build" and the process in it's entirety and construction.
ST*BA: What was your favorite part of the process?
SMH: To capture the full scale & size of the art piece grow.
ST*BA: Can you share a short anecdote or a comment that you heard about the project that stuck with you?
SMH: "Chee-hoo, that is gorgeous!" from numerous cars driving by.
ST*BA: ST*BA is rooted in igniting conversations amongst our neighbors in order to learn more about the stories, culture and history of Wailuku. How do you think this project can do that?
SMH: The community will ask questions which will hopefully open up conversations as to "how, why, which, where" to get everyone in the community more involved.
