SMALL TOWN * BIG ART presents Wailuku-based teaching artist Heather Knowles Negaard's FREE Slam Poetry Workshop!

 The objective of this workshop is to: 

• Introduce a small group of interested teens to spoken word performances (slam poetry)
• Help you begin to develop your own poetic/performance voices
• Encourage you to showcase your experiences through your unique lens of growing up on Maui

Participants will convene at Sabado Studios in Wailuku, with ample space for social distancing while intimate enough to interact, create and enjoy. Workshop outline:

• Get to know each other briefly and learn about the history and backbone of the poetry slam (resources, Q&A and prompts for your own work!)
• Workshop poems, talk about your unique point of view (being from Hawaii/Maui/Wailuku), learn of additional examples 
• Get on the mic! Feel what's it like to read/ perform in front of an  audience of any size and learn about how to take your work to the next level​

Heather Knowles Negaard is the founder and 10-year Slammaster of the Des Moines (Iowa) Poetry Slam. She has published 10 chapbooks and one anthology, and luckily now calls Maui home.
