GLOW in the Garden Juried Exhibition
Developed in partnership with Imua Family Services, the Glow in the Garden juried exhibition took place on Saturday, May 27, 2023 from sunset through 8:30 p.m. at the Will Smith Imua Discovery Garden 2023 Butterfly Festival, free and open to the public.
Imua’s Butterfly Festival was launched in 2022 with the unveiling of the SMALL TOWN * BIG ART Wailuku Wings project, led by sculptor Bobby Zokaites. The event hosts games, food vendors, live entertainment and more as an opportunity to gather as a community in support of children and families with developmental needs.
Artists of all ages were invited to submit pre-fabricated work featuring a wireless light component for consideration to be on view for this one-night-only event. Awards were distributed by Imua Family Services for their top selections in the amounts of $2,500, $1,000 and $500.
Installed throughout the outdoor gardens of the former Yokouchi Estate – which is now a place where children learn through play and exploration in outdoor natural learning environments designed just for them – the following artworks were selected from a pool of applicants to transform the Will Smith Imua Discovery Garden with light and color for this community event:
Set against the historic backdrop of Wailuku Town, ʻĪao Valley and Mauna Kahālāwai, the Will Smith Imua Discovery Garden's Glow in the Garden is the region’s only free curated outdoor public light-art experience. The lights will be engaged at sunset as part of Imua Family Services’ second annual Butterfly Festival, which began at 4 pm.
